As we’re moving more and more towards the depth in knowledge of breast milk, now it’s time to know how to warm breast milk.

If you have been pumping your milk as you’re producing less milk, then you might have come cross this question on how to store breast milk after pumping.

There’s no doubt that someone might have misguided you that you can boil your milk to kill bacterias. But, you must know that your body has produced something natural for your baby. This means that it can be consumed as it is without any addition or subtraction.

By boiling, the breast milk composition gets changed as the water in it gets evaporated. Therefore the amount of other nutrition present in it may get unbalanced. Hence, breast milk shall not be boiled like cow’s milk.

Now that we know the difference between warming and boiling, let’s know how to warm breast milk. Warming can be done if the temperature outside is low. Sometimes, in order to prevent the child from having fever from drinking cold milk, breast milk can be warmed a little.

Step 1. Warming The Milk

Take a pan and put water in it and start the stove on low-medium flame. Take another pan of small size as compared to the other pan. Then, put it inside the other pan and make sure the water doesn’t enter the second pan.

Put your breast milk in it and stir it constantly. Make sure that you don’t completely boil the milk. Keep it slightly warm suitable for a baby to drink.

Step 2. Shake the milk before feeding

Now that you have warmed the milk, it is fit for drinking again. But, before you actually start feeding the child, make sure you shake the milk in a bonne so that all the warm and cold parts get mixed well. This would also help stabilize the temperature. Thereby, making the breast milk composition fit for drinking again.

Step 3. Do not think of using oven/microwave

Although using an oven or a microwave may seem to be an easy way out, but it’s not the best way. Always remember that easy paths have never made legends. And you should also not think of following an easy path when it comes to the health of your own child.

Step 4. Don’t re-freeze milk

Once you’ve frozen your breast milk and warmed it again, do not re-freeze the breast milk again. It is not recommended to change the temperature of the breast milk again and again. This can result in the change in breast milk composition by around 40% resulting in less amount of nutrients provided to the baby.

We have observed that some mothers face problems regarding smell in their stored breast milk after pumping. There is no need to feel scared. If the milk is only one day old, then it is fit to drink as per the presence of an enzyme lipase. This enzyme usually breaks down fats and releases fatty acids.

But, if the smell comes out from the fresh breast milk, then you must consider visiting a gynaecologist for the same.
