Bhakti Sharma is the pride of India. She’s an Indian open water swimmer. She is not just the first Indian, but the first Asian woman and the youngest in the world to set a record in open swimming in the Antarctic waters. In such a cold water, Bhakti Sharma swimmer swam 1.4 miles (2.3 kms) in 41.14 mins. The water in which Bhakti Sharma record was made, was 1 degrees cold.

She broke the record of eminent swimmers like Lynne Cox from the USA and Lewis Pugh from Great Britain.

She has also been appreciated by PM Narendra Modi on her victories.

Bhakti Sharma Family

Bhakti Sharma says that she began swimming when she was two and a half years old. She says that her mom started teaching her from that early age. And this is how her journey of swimming began.

Bhakti Sharma was born in Mumbai and brought up in Udaipur. Other than that, there’s very little known about her family on the internet.

Bhakti’s mother is Leena Sharma and is the first teacher who taught her anything in life.

Bhakti Sharma record wasn’t made like that. She’s been swimming for a really long time. And despite all that, Bhakti never did any course in swimming.

Bhakti Sharma record is something that the whole world knows. But, there’s one more thing. It’s the fact that Bhakti Sharma has a Master’s degree in Communications Management from Symbiosis School of Media and Communication, Bengaluru.

Bhakti Sharma completed her Bachelor’s degree from Mohan Lal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, Rajasthan.

There has been a lot that Bhakti Sharma has achieved in her life. And a lot more that she will achieve more. But, for the time being, let’s see what all major milestones Bhakti Sharma swimmer has achieved.

  1. Her first open water (sea) competition was a 16 km one. It stretched from Uran port to Gateway of India in 2003. She was 14 years old at the time when this competition took place.
  2. She’s the third person in the whole world who has swam in the Arctic Ocean.
  3. In 2006, she crossed the English channel in 13 hours 55 minutes at the age of 16. The route stretched from Shakespeare Beach, Dover England to Calais, France.
  4. In the same year, 2006, she won the Lake Zurich Swim.
  5. She swam 25 km in Gulf of Mexico at the 2007 U.S.A. Swimming Open Water Championships in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.
  6. She completed a race of 6.5 km around the Rock Alcatraz which was 6.5 km long.
  7. In 2010, she swam 1.8 km in 33 minutes in the Arctic Ocean and thus she became the second and youngest swimmer in the World to swim in 4 oceans.

Bhakti shares that she didn’t have access to proper swimming pools back in her days. Now after some time, a school opened up a swimming pool where she continued her training. This was the time when Bhakti Sharma swimmer took part in a district level competition in which she came last. She said, “I finished the race and that’s what matters.” This shows the kind of attitude Bhakti had for her work. Along with this, Bhakti shares that the toughest time during her training was when the swimming pools had to close during the winter season. During those times, her mother used to request the swimming pool owners and even the resort owners to open up the space so that she could practice. Sometimes, she used to be the only one in the entire pool or even the entire swimming pool complexes. This is how Bhakti Sharma swimmer did her practice for swimming.
