Over the years, it has never changed for him. Every other male actor that is launched by him is questioned to be his “partner.” And that is what saddens him and restricts him for talking about his sexual orientation in public. He is quoted saying in his book, “The reason I don’t say it out aloud is simply that I don’t want to be dealing with the FIRs. I’m very sorry. I have a job, I have a commitment to my company, to my people who work for me; there are over a hundred people that I’m answerable to. I’m not going to sit in the courts because of ridiculous, completely bigoted individuals who have no education, no intelligence.”

Karan Johar also spoke about how his physical appearance hindered his sexuality or sexual desires. He quotes, “I was also very large and was grappling with my weight issues. I felt physically undesirable.” It is distressing to see how we have hampered our mindsets for social acceptance. And this was what KJo went through too. Soon later, he started working on losing his weight. And it was after the release of his directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai that he encountered his first time. He states that he met his partner at a hotel in New York. He refused to give any deets as he had said it is “very personal” to him.

Karan Johar also states that over the years, one rumor has stuck by him. That is his relationship with his long time friend and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. Karan actively speaks about and for the LGBTQ community. He has always been supporting them forthrightly. Recently, KJo flagrantly spoke about the community when India abolished Section 377. He cites, “I just woke up and I cried. I cried for the community. I cried for the fact that there was finally freedom. There was one love and equal love for our great country to have supported this. It was a historical judgement. I’m so glad that it is finally accepted legally, that you can love who you desire to without any legal pressures on them.” He also stated further, “The next step is gay marriages are allowed in our country. That is the next step I aspire for as an Indian, as a human being, at a humanitarian level. I hope that happens very soon.” 

Karan Johar grew up in an atmosphere where talking about sexuality wasn’t casual. And till now he has always remained in the closet. Not that he hasn’t dropped hints, he has, in fact many. Many people have trolled him and making him the butt of their homophobic jokes in numerous ways and innumerable times.
