5 Practical Benefits of Travel

Travel is something that many people look forward to, because everyone needs a little adventure from time to time. After all, variety is the spice of life. However, beyond simply curing boredom, travel has several practical benefits, as well. To those who want to travel but think they can’t justify the expense, here are a few reasons that travel is an investment in bettering yourself.

Taking a Break Can Rejuvenate You

While it’s a simple, well known concept, it’s worth noting that rest is restorative. Taking a load off after work or getting a good night’s sleep are known to help your body and mind refresh themselves. Likewise, taking a break from your day to day routine can have a similar effect. This is the very reason people generally take a vacation once a year. The benefits are even greater when the travel experience itself is relaxing. For example, cruises from Florida provide a luxurious and relaxing trip that can exponentially increase the restorative power of your getaway.

A Change in Scenery Is Good for Your Brain

Rest and relaxation is all well and good, but there are additional health benefits that can be gained from traveling. In addition to taking a break from your routine, traveling allows you to take a break from your surroundings. While this may seem inconsequential, it’s well documented that humans need to be exposed to new stimuli, such as environs, in order to maintain good mental health. This is particularly important in an age in which the average job and lifestyle lack that kind of variety.

Travel Encourages Physical Activity

In addition to helping your body and mind via rest and variety, travel can also promote fitness. Many trips entail more walking than many people are used to, for instance, but many trips often include hiking and other outdoor activities. Even a simple trip to the beach is largely an excuse to swim. These activities might seem a bit too much like work to many people, but pairing them with a vacation in a new place makes it feel more like adventure, and that mentality alone can do wonders for one’s level of fitness.

Exposure to Foreign Cultures Broaden Your Horizons

One of the most often cited benefits of travel is that it gives you new experiences and perspective by exposing you to other cultures. This is most applicable when it comes to international travel, but the same applies to traveling to other parts of your own country, albeit to a lesser extent. Seeing how others live, including the trials that they face and their customs, can enrich your life in several ways. A “city slicker” can benefit immensely from witnessing a hard working, rural community, for example, and the more holistic philosophies of eastern countries stand in stark contrast to the more individualistic way of life in many western nations.

Traveling Gets You out of Your Comfort Zone

In many ways, travel offers you new experiences, and those new experiences can often challenge you in some way. These challenges are, again, something you may not otherwise be willing to do. However, the overall experience makes these challenges occasions to which to rise, if you will. For example, visiting foreign countries will necessarily involve a language barrier. Even countries that share a language have different terminology and slang, for instance. Therefore, the necessary process of communicating with people can become more difficult when traveling. Overcoming this challenge can often boost your confidence, which is something many people need help with. Likewise, many of the elements of travel mentioned above entail a departure from the norm, and many who deal with anxiety, for example, can benefit tremendously from being out of their element for a while.

Traveling is a time honored drive of the human species, and there are many reasons why that may be the case. Evolution often provides people with the innate desire to do things that are good for them, and this is no exception. These tips can provide you with the incentives you need in order to finally take the plunge and plan a trip.
