Losing Your Hair? Genetics or Hard Water? Try Minoxidil

Men lose over a hundred strands of hair a day. Hair falls out after some time hair grows back naturally. The hair regeneration cycle is a natural process that repeats itself in different durations based on a person’s diet, the weather, bathwater quality, and several other factors.

There will be a time when men lose more hair than that which grows back. Some men decide to get a hair loss spray to reverse the process. Other men will blame it on their genes and embrace baldness.

Is Genetics The Reason For Male Pattern Baldness?

The excuse given by 90% of men when asked about their thinning or receding hairline is genetics. Scientists believe that a man’s genes are responsible for producing a DHT hormone. Due to the DHT, the hair that grows back is not as thick as it was previously. Over time the hair regrowth process also takes longer. Flimsy, thinner, and shorter hair grows back. But it takes too long to notice any hair growth at all. The next step is hair follicle shrinkage, which means that now no hair will grow at all.

Male pattern baldness begins with a receding hairline. It continues with a thinning forelock. Over time the crown of your head will be bald, but you still might have hair on the sides of your head. If you are genetically going to be bald, the process might begin as early as in your teens. A rule of thumb, expect more loss of hair the sooner it starts.

What is Hard Water?

Hard water refers to water that contains very high mineral content. Water gets a high mineral content due to being in contact with minerals such as limestone and chalk. The high mineral content could be in the pipes, it could be in the place where the water is stored, or it could be due to the climate of that region.

Does Hard Water Contribute to Baldness?

One of the main ingredients of hard water is calcium carbonate. Once the calcium carbonate comes into contact with your head, it marks the start of the calcification process. There will be a soapy film of water on your scalp after you finish bathing due to calcification.

Over time, calcification can restrict blood flow to your scalp. Given enough time, this can lead to baldness. There will be a stage when your hair is especially tangled and frizzy after you finish bathing, before the next phase of baldness. You can try to use magnesium oil mixed in your shampoo to counteract the effect of the calcium deposits.

How to Neutralize the Effects of Hard Water on Your Scalp?

One way to neutralize the effects of hard water on your scalp is to install a water softener. Water softening machines ensure that all of the water coming out of your taps gets softened. But water softeners are not the cheapest machines. Also, they are hard to install. A more cost-effective option is a shower filter.

The shower filters are not as powerful. But they are a cheaper and quicker solution. Another way to neutralize the effects of hard water on your scalp is to mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with three cups of water. The result is a softer liquid for rinsing hair.
