Keeping Your RV Road-worthy with Roof Coating

Owning an RV is a huge investment. Thus, you must protect it so that you can enjoy using your mobile home for a long time. One of the most vulnerable parts of an RV is the roof, so you should give it more attention. It’s a good thing that there are products today that can protect the RV’s roof and extend its useful life at the same time.

Benefits of using a roof coating on an RV

The weather is one of the enemies of RV roofs. For long-lasting repairs, you should choose the right product to protect an RV roof, such as a polyurethane protective roof sealant. Applying a roof sealant will extend the life of the RV roof, seal the seams and joints, and make your roof sturdy, to ensure that the entire RV is protected from the weather.

Here are some of the benefits of sealing your RV roof.

  • Your roof becomes waterproof. When you seal your RV roof with a roof coating material, it will protect you from the rain, protect your motorhome from water leaks, and ensure that the interior of the motorhome remains dry. Leaks from the roof can damage several fixtures in the motorhome’s interior, such as the walls, insulation, cabinets, bed, flooring, electrical wiring, and more.
  • It enhances the look of the RV. The roof of your RV is the most exposed part of the vehicle to the elements. As a result, it is prone to dents, holes and scratches from the elements it comes in contact with, such as rain, sunlight, tree branches, debris, and dust. Since most RVs have white-colored roofs, the elements can quickly make them look old. Coating the roof with a sealant and paint will protect it and make it look brand new.
  • Protects you and the interior of the RV. An excellent RV roof coating has UV protection, which will help ward off the sun’s harmful rays while keeping the interior cool and comfortable. In addition, you can save power because you will rarely need to use your air conditioner or your heater.

How to protect and maintain your RV roof

It is essential to know what material your roof is made from since different types require different maintenance, repair, and coating methods. Most flat RV roofs are made from rubber EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer). Rubber thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roof is made from polypropylene and ethylene-propylene. Some RVs may have fiberglass roofs, while others have aluminum roofs.

It is essential to keep your RV clean aside from protecting it from the elements when not in use. Regular cleaning can prevent the accumulation of dust and dirt that retain water, which can cause rust to form around joints, screws, and other metal parts. You can wash the roof with water and mild dishwashing detergent solution and scrub the roof using a brush with soft bristles. Apply the correct type of sealer if you discover any holes or cracks after ensuring that the roof surface is thoroughly dry.

Choose the correct type of roof coating to protect your RV roof, as RV roofs are made from different materials. Keep your RV away from the elements when you’re not using it, and make sure that you keep it clean and well maintained so that it will be ready for your next vacation.
