What to wear to a winery visit

Wine tasting is always a classy, sophisticated, and fun experience. The combination of mouthwatering vintages, picturesque settings, gorgeous architecture, and (usually) excellent weather means that a winery visit is the ultimate smart-casual event.

But with all the laid-back charm and relaxed good times going on around you, the last thing you want to concern yourself about is your wardrobe! But winery visits are often quite elegant, while also coming with a few practical concerns as well. Getting your outfit right for a day of wine tasting can be crucial for your overall enjoyment.

So if you are packing for a cruise to Europe and planning a few winery visits while you are vacationing across the pond, here are a few outfit considerations to keep in mind!

A layered outfit

The key to wine tasting chic is finding balance. Wineries tend to be reasonably classy locales, and the tastings themselves can be pretty sophisticated, so you’ll want to aim towards the dressier end of the spectrum rather than being too casual. However, comfort is key, and if you are going to be somewhere for a whole afternoon (and even into the evening) avoiding a chill is a good idea. Go for a nice dress with a cute blazer or a light cardigan for the perfect smart/comfortable combo. Layering is a wine taster’s best friend!

Comfortable shoes

One area of your outfit that shouldn’t be too dressy is your footwear. Most wineries are essentially big, fancy farms, and you will likely be doing quite a bit of standing around and walking before the day is done. Think flats rather than heels, and plan for comfort rather than high fashion!

A small purse with a strap

Wine tasting requires the use of both hands throughout the day. You’ll be holding wine glasses, water tumblers, and even plates of nibbles, so the last thing you want to do is worry about your purse. Grab something small and unobtrusive that can hang easily out of the way, and concentrate entirely on the experience!

Bonus tip – easy on the perfume!

Tasting wine is all about, well, taste! And smell has a huge impact on how we appreciate tastes and flavors. Strong perfume can get in the way of really appreciating the depth and character of the wine you are tasting, so pick something light or, better still, avoid perfume all together!
