Shopping For Engagement Rings? How To Choose The Perfect Diamond

Shopping for engagement rings can be an exciting time for a couple. Not only does it symbolize an important milestone in your relationship, but the ring you choose is something that will last a lifetime. So, to get exactly what you want, make sure you know what to look for in a diamond.

Important Considerations

In the diamond trade, jewelers grade diamonds based on a system commonly known as “the 4Cs.” Since diamonds form beneath the earth’s surface, each one is completely unique. Larger, quality diamonds are harder to find, making them rarer, thus driving up the price of a precious item. But, almost nothing compares to the unparalleled beauty of a high-quality diamond. So, how do you choose the right piece? Here’s what jewelers consider when grading diamonds.

Cut

There is a misconception that cut refers to the shape of a diamond (princess, round, marquis, etc.) However, this is not the case. Cut actually refers to the craftsmanship during the cutting and polishing process of the rough diamond. The cut’s facets give the diamond its fire and brilliance. Jewelers rate cut from poor to excellent.

Clarity

Some diamonds come with slight imperfections. Instead of being, essentially, clear as glass, there may be leftover tiny flecks inside that grew in the earth. Jewelers call these inclusions. The fewer, or smaller the inclusions, the better quality diamond. Jewelers rate diamonds on a scale from S12 to FL (or Included to Flawless).

Color

When you think of a diamond, you think of a product that is clear and sparkles because of its facets. Well, depending on its characteristics, the diamond may come with a slight tint of color. This may seem unnoticeable at first, but it can impact the overall quality. Colorless diamonds shine brighter than diamonds with color, and provide a better overall look. Color ratings range from J to D (D indicating a colorless diamond).

Carat

When purchasing a diamond, many people make the mistake of considering carat, or size, above all other factors. While a large diamond can certainly seem impressive, it does not guarantee a quality product. Diamonds for engagement rings typically range from .25 carat to 2 carat (or more). Just remember, ask your jeweler for all the information on the diamonds and take your time comparing them. A larger diamond could have imperfections that a smaller one doesn’t, making it overall lower quality.

How Can You Choose A Stunning Ring?

When choosing the right diamond, ask your jeweler to compare them side by side so you can see the difference in each characteristic. Also, keep in mind that major jewelry retailers mass produce rings. So, if you are looking for a truly unique piece, consider handmade jewelry in Toronto to have a custom made engagement ring.

Your engagement ring is a symbol of eternal love and commitment. As you and your fiance embark on this new adventure together, your ring should be a reminder of the unique bond you share and your dedication to each other.
