Well, what should I call her, a Former Model, Television Actress, Producer or a Politician. Smriti Irani was born on 23 March, 1976 in New Delhi, India. Though her hometown is Mumbai, Maharashtra. Smriti’s father’s name is Shri Ajay Kumar Malhotra who was a Khatri Punjabi and her mother’s name is Shibani Bahchi, who belonged to a Bengali family. Not many people know that Smriti married one of her childhood friends, who was also her good friend’s ex-husband. Smriti married Zubin Irani, a Parsi businessman in 2000, after he got divorced from his first wife, Mona (who is still a good friend of Smriti). Zubin has a daughter named Shanelle with his first wife, Mona. She lives with him and Smriti, along with their other two children Zohr (boy) and Zoish (girl). Smriti shares a very warm relationship with her eldest daughter, Shanelle. She has never differentiated between any of the three kids.
Smriti Irani came to Mumbai to participate in the Miss India Contest and made it to the final round becoming one of the final five contestants. But she did not win the title.
The actress also applied for the Jet Airways hostess interview, but was rejected. She then worked at McDonalds, serving burgers and swabbing the floors and cleaning tables. Shobha Kapoor saw Smriti in some show and asked her to meet Ekta at Balaji Telefilms. Thus, luck finally began to shine on her when Ekta asked her to audition for Tulsi’s role in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’.
Smriti Irani made her debut in television industry with Ekta Kapoor’s show “Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu The“. In this show, she played the role of Tulsi Mihir Virani, which was a leading role. She was the part of this show from 2000-2008. The show gave her the hype she wanted and while portraying the role of an ideal “Bahu”, she became everyone’s favourite.
Beside “Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu The”, Smriti Irani was the part of many shows like Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat and also hosted a show called “Kuch..Dil Se”. Later she became the producer of a show called “Virrudh” and “Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan” under her banner Ugraya Entertainment from 2006-2008. Later she appeared in many tv shows and hosted reality shows like Savdhan India.
Smriti Irani also tried her luck in films, but was not very much successful. She appeared in a film “Maalik Ek” which was directed by Deepak Balraj Vij. Jackie Shroff played the role of Sai Baba in this movie. Later she appeared in movies like “Jai Bolo Telangana” which was a Telugu film and then Amrita which was a Bengali film.
Smriti won four consecutive Indian Television Academy Awards in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 for her role as Tulsi Virani in the serial ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’. She also received the same award in 2010. Smriti Irani bagged Indian Telly Awards in the years 2002, 2003 and 2006. She was felicitated with Great! Women Achiever’s Awards in 2005. Garv Indian TV Awards honoured her with the Best TV Personality of The Decade award in 2014.
She did walk on the ramp during The Seventh Annual Pidilite–CPAA Charity Fashion Show showcasing designers Manish Malhotra and Shaina NC in support of the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) in Mumbai on July 1, 2012.
Her mother was a member of Jana Sangh and her grandfather was an RSS Swayamsevak, so she has been too a part of RSS Swayamsevak Sangh from her childhood.
In the year 2003, Smriti Irani joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During the subsequent year, she was appointed as the Vice-President of the Maharashtra Youth Wing. She contested as a BJP candidate against Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk constituency in 2004 general elections. Though she lost the elections, the party acknowledged her hard work by appointing her as an executive member of its central committee. Smriti Irani continued to climb the ladder of success. She became the national secretary of the party and the President of the party’s women’s wing in 2010.
Looking at her leadership skills and her dedication, the BJP gave her the ticket to contest against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, UP in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. She lost to Gandhi by a very narrow margin. Looking at her determination and the leadership qualities, she was appointed as the HRD minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Council of Ministers. She, thus, became the youngest member of the cabinet. In a Cabinet expansion and reshuffle that took place on July 5, Smriti Irani was shifted to the Ministry of Textiles.
Smriti Irani became the Member of Rajya Sabha in 2011. She was appointed as the BJP’s Vice-President in 2012. From Sept. 2011 to May 2014, she was a member of Committee on Coal and Steel. In august 2012, she was appointed as a member of Parliamentary Forum on Disaster Management and a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Urban Development. Smriti became the Union Minister for Human Resource Development on May 26, 2014. And as already mentioned above, she moved to Ministry Of Textile on July 5.
Smriti Irani loves Gujrati Cuisine, Tea and Coffee. Her favourite colour is blue. Smriti’s favourite actor is Dharmendra and favourite actress are Rekha and Hema Malini and it’s obvious that her favourite politician is Narendra Modi. The car collection of Smriti is quite small. Being an actress as well as a politician it is obvious that she has to go through a lot of controversies. In 2004, Smriti Irani had stated in an affidavit that she had a Bachelor’s of Arts degree that she had attained in 1996 from the School of Correspondence, Delhi University. But in the 2014 General Elections, when she contested the Amethi seat in UP against Congress’s Rahul Gandhi, she had declared that she had a Bachelor’s of Commerce Part -1 degree in 1994, University of Delhi.
A whole new chapter was added to the controversy when Smriti Irani stated that she also had a degree from America’s famous Yale University. She asserted that those who had any doubt about her leadership capabilities and her educational portfolio, could file a PIL and find out the truth behind the affidavit controversy.
She was criticized for not taking appropriate actions in the suicide case of a Dalit student of Hyderabad University, Rohit Vemula.
Management institutes IIM were at the loggerheads with Irani when she cleared the clause to include the IIM’s under the ambit of her Ministry.
