Ranveer Singh is arguably the biggest star in Bollywood today and 2018 has a huge contribution to his meteoric rise. There were three high points and absolutely no low point for the star during the whole year. The actor has shown his versatility as an actor over his last few movies – Bajirao Mastani,
He started the year with the release of Padmavat opposite his lady luck Deepika and the movie did huge business even after the controversies surrounding the film. Everyone loved Ranveer’s portrayal of Khilji and he got full marks from the critics. He did such stupendous acting in the movie that Shahid Kapoor was completely overshadowed. The film won critical acclaim in addition to being a great commercial success. The movie went on to earn over Rs. 500 crore worldwide and was the biggest hit of Ranveer’s career. Ranveer also won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for the movie.
The second movie that released was “Simmba” with Rohit Shetty. It was very different from the period drama “Padmavat” and we saw Ranveer in a completely different avatar. He looked as comfortable in the “Over the Top” dialogues of Simmba as he was in Padmaavat. Simmba was a big opportunity for Ranveer as he was able to convince Rohit Shetty to cast him in an out and out masala movie. This movie was all about Ranveer from the word go and Sara (his opposite) had a pretty small role. The movie went on to earn over Rs. 230 crores and was a commercial success. It also marked the entry of Ranveer into a full blown Masala movie franchise.
In one of the interviews, Ranveer talked about how he landed Simmba and the kind of effort that went into it. It all started with Ranveer recommending Rohit Shetty as the director for Ching’s advertising campaign. Ranveer knew that Rohit was one director who could do justice to the grandiose of the campaign and also got to show his skills to the director during the production of that campaign. During these interactions, Ranveer was able to convince Rohit to cast him in the next directorial “Simmba” and as they say, the rest is history.
These two movies were great hits; however, the highlight of the year for Ranveer was definitely Deepveer wedding. Ranveer had been in a relationship with Deepika for a few years now. Finally, they decided to get married on 14th-15th November. The marriage took place on two days – they got married in Konkani style on 14th and Anand Karaj ceremony took place on 15th. The wedding trended on Social Media for weeks with the fans waiting for first wedding pictures with bated breath.
Deepveer wedding, in fact, was the biggest social media event of last year and created a lot of mileage for both Deepika and Ranveer. Deepika has not done any movie post the wedding but Ranveer’s Gully Boy has released since then. Ranveer has been appreciated by everyone for his portrayal of Murad including Will Smith.
All in all, 2018 was definitely a year that belonged to Ranveer and he seems to be going stronger in 2019. He is currently shooting for Kapil Dev biopic and Takht and we wish him the best for both the movies.
