So without any further ado, let me take you through our favourite picks from each era in Bollywood.
1. Anpadh (1962)
Anpadh, starring eminent actor Balraj Sahni as Choudhary Shambhunath who considers accumulating wealth and stacking money more important than gaining an education. The movie talked about the importance of education in 1962 when our forefathers did not consider it important enough.
In the movie, Lajwanti, who is Shambhunath’s sister finds it difficult to pay attention to learning in the school. Later on, she gets married to a highly educated man and due to some unfortunate events, she gets thrown out of her house while being pregnant. She gives birth to a daughter. Making sure that her daughter does not walk the same path, she provides her daughter with all the educational needs. The movie established the need for education firmly in Indian minds.
2. Mera Naam Joker (1970)
Do you know which movie was the debut film of veteran actor Raj Kapoor? It was this movie. Mera Naam Joker had a great storyline with a 3 hour 44-minute run time. It has many heart touching songs which would raise emotions in every corner of your heart. The movie is slightly based on the life story of Raj Kapoor. He smiles at almost all the occasions and tries his best to make the audience laugh.
The movie shows the unseen side of the life of jokers. How they try miserably to make us laugh even when that form of entertainment causes them enormous amounts of pain. This movie was highly relevant in the 1970s since Circus was a mainstream entertainment channel back then.
3. Karz (1980)
Remember this song – Om Shanti Om? It’s from this very amazing film. The movie talks about the murder of a rich man by his girlfriend. The main issue covered in the movie is how greed for money makes people harm their close ones.
The main turning point in the movie comes when the murdered person is reincarnated and finds out the reason for his re-birth. I recently saw this movie online and I was awestruck by the storytelling method.
4. Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)
This is one of those movies, which I have watched at least 50 times. Every time I see its poster, I feel nostalgic. It reminds me of the good old days when Salman Khan used to do sweet romantic roles.
The movie revolves around the love story of Prem and Nisha who met each other at the wedding of their elder siblings. The movie is directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya.
This movie shows you how two people fall in love with each other with an amazing set of songs to support the situations. For me, this is the best movie of Salman Khan till date and is infused with all the elements that one looks for in a commercial movie.
5. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)
This is one of those movies which still inspires memes revolving around the internet. Gadar is a really heart touching movie starring Sunny Deol. Its story dates back to the partition era of the country.
Sunny Deol plays the role of a truck driver who falls in love with a Muslim woman from Pakistan. Sunny saves the girl from attacks and looks forward to marrying her, but finds out that people stand against him in this decision. Indeed, it is one of those movies which have boosted the morale of the Indian people. I saw this movie online and found that it shows a brief history of the events that occurred during the partition. Just like Bollywood does in every other film, it also had a punch of romance.
6. Mukkabaaz (2017)
An Anurag Kashyap directed movie starring Jimmy Sheirgill, Vineet Kumar Singh and Zoya Hussain in the lead roles. Mukkabaaz is the story of a boxer who struggles to make his way to the top of Boxing. The movie starts with the protagonist Shravan training under Bhagwan Das Mishra who’s a local Don. Shravan falls for Mishra’s niece but gets rejected by Mishra. Later on, Shravan strives hard to become a boxer and eventually wins his love.
I really loved the way Anurag Kashyap has directed the movie. By far, this was the best recent movie that I have watched and it was critically acclaimed as well. In fact, the movie also received a standing ovation at MAMI fest.
In case, you have not watched these movies – Go ahead and watch these movies online. In fact, you can watch these movies online free of cost on ZEE5.
