You may know who is known as the Missile Man of India. But, we bet you didn’t know about the Missile Woman of India. Well, today we’re going to talk about the Missile Woman of India, Dr Tessy Thomas.

Tessy Thomas is a 56 years old April 1963 born Indian Scientist. She is the Director General of Aeronautical Systems and the former Project Director for Agni-IV Missile in Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

Dr Tessy Thomas was born to a Syrian Christian family in Alapuzzha, Kerela. Her name was so given after the name of Mother Teresa. As she belongs to such a crucial organization of the country, so not much information is available on the internet. Although, it is much debated on the internet whether Dr Tessy Thomas’ father was an Indian Forest Services officer or a small businessman. When she was 13 years old, her father suffered from a stroke which left him paralyzed on his right side. Her mother, who was a teacher at that time, quit her job to look after her husband in such a critical condition.
In her early days, she was highly fascinated with Rockets and aircrafts. She grew up near the Thumba Rocket Launching Station which was exactly the same place where she developed all this interest.
In interviews, Dr Tessy Thomas has revealed that they are total 6 siblings – 5 sisters and 1 brother. She has said that all of her siblings were given free choices to choose the career they wanted to pursue so they can excel in anything they wanted to.
Dr Tessy Thomas has completed her schooling from St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School and St. Joseph’s Girl’s Higher Secondary School in Alleppey (Alappzuha). She had a keen interest in Physics and Mathematics. Even in her 11th and 12th standard, she secured 100 marks in her Mathematics examination.
To study engineering from Government Engineering College, she took a loan of Rs 100 per month from State Bank of India. She also received a scholarship from the college after entering the top 10 students of the merit list during her admissions.
In her school and college days, she was ardent in extra-curricular activities like debates and sports such as badminton.
Then she went to Institute of Armament Technology, Pune to pursue her M. Tech in Guided Missile. She also has an MBA in Operations Management and a Ph.D. in Guidance Missile under DRDO.
The early life of Dr Tessy Thomas is not much known to the internet as she heads a very crucial department of a very important organization of the country. She joined DRDO’s Department of Design and Development of the new generation ballistic missile, Agni. Then she was appointed to this department by the Missile Man of India, Shri APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr Tessy Thomas was also the Associate Project Director for Agni-III missile project. She was also the Project Director for Agni-IV and Agni-V missile project. Finally, in 2018 she was appointed as the Director-General of the Aeronautical Systems of DRDO in 2018.
For her contribution to the country’s development, Dr Tessy Thomas has also received the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for making India self reliant in the field of missile technology.
