Chanda Kochhar was born in a Hindu Sindhi family in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. She pursued her schooling from St. Angela Sophia School, Jaipur. Later on she moved to Mumbai to pursue her higher education from Jai Hind College for B. Com in the University of Mumbai.
She comes from a highly educated background. Chanda Kochhar has a well established command over Retail Marketing. She has a deep knowledge of Business Analytics and has played a vital role in the Retail Banking Cycle in India.
After graduating in 1982, she read Cost accountancy from Institute of Cost Accountants of India and then went for a Master of Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai. She has two gold medals from Wockhardt Gold Medal for Excellence in Management Studies as well as the J. N. Bose Gold Medal in Cost Accountancy.
There have been various phases in the career life of Chanda Kochhar . Let’s see them one by one.
Chanda Kochhar kicked off her career with ICICI Bank as its Management Trainee. In her early years of service to the ICICI Bank she handled various projects such as Project Appraisal and Monitoring and she also evaluated projects in the industries such as textile, paper and cement.
1990s was a very crucial and struggling time for the Indian economy. The economy of the country was struggling to revive itself. And this was the time when she was appointed as one of the core team members of setting up the bank. In 1994, she was appointed as the Assistant General Manager and then Deputy General Manager in 1196. Later on, in the begin of the financial year of 2001, she was promoted to as the Executive Director, then she became the Deputy Managing Director of ICICI Bank in 2006. After this, she took over as the CFO and Joint Managing Director of ICICI Bank.
This was a very important time in the professional life of Chanda Kochhar. In 2009, she was appointed as the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI bank. She was also the President of the International Monetary Conference. Along with this, she is also the deputy chairman of the Indian Banks Association. She is also the Board of Governors at IIIT Vadodara.
Chanda Kochhar has been quite famous for her act of favouring the Videcon Group for lending money. A famous newspaper, The Indian Express reported transactions and favourable loans to the Essar Group as well. In January 2019, Chanda Kochhar, her husband and industrial Venugopal Dhoot were named in a fraud case in CBI.
Later on, she was asked to step down as the CEO of ICICI Bank for undefined time. And today, Sandeep Bakshi has taken the place of Chanda Kochhar.
