Before we begin with this, you must know the difference between colostrum and breast milk. Colostrum is the first stage milk produced by a mother when a child is born. It is a yellowish syrupy substance which has a lot of vital nutrients for a baby’s development and growth. Hence, it shall be given as soon as the baby wants it or as per the doctor’s recommendations.

Shelf life of breast milk

Breast milk is a powerful ingredient just like the most powerful endosperm on the planet – coconut water. Just like that, breast milk is the optimum substance for children. If you want to store breast milk after pumping, then you can keep it for up to 4 hours.

The shelf life of a mother’s breast milk is up to 4 hours. If the breast milk is pumped in room temperature, then it can be kept there for around 4 hours.

Refrigerate your milk

It is okay to refrigerate and store your breast milk after pumping. You may refrigerate your breast milk within 4 days of pumping. If that’s not possible, then you must freeze it as soon as possible, right after pumping.

Refrigeration won’t harm the breast milk. But, it must be noted that if the milk starts producing a foul smell, it’s generally due to the breaking of fats into fatty acids by lipase enzyme. Otherwise, it may also indicate that the mother’s milk is expired due to entry of bacteria in it.

Cooler packs are cool

Indian mothers might be unaware of what cooler packs are. So, let’s explain the concept first. Cooler packs are just like lunch box covers which are specially designed to store breast milk.

There is a separation in the pack where ice or chilled water is filled and the other compartment has room for bottles. The chilled water or ice helps keeping the temperature low. Thereby, making the breast milk fit for a long time.

Many working women in the country are using these packs and feed their children whenever needed.

Just make sure that you refrigerate your breast milk within 24 hours of using cooler packs to store breast milk.

Tips to store breast milk

So, by now you know how to store breast milk after pumping. But, this is not everything. There are a few tips and tricks which you can do to make sure you deliver the best to your child.

Material for storing breast milk

Use BPA free plastic containers or bottles which have a tight sealing lid. This would ensure no harmful toxins or chemicals to enter the mother’s milk. Also, don’t use any plastic container having recycle number 7 written on it. You can find this number on the bottom side of the containers and bottles.
